Lois Lowry was born in 1937 in Hawaii. Her father was an army officer. Therefore she has to move around when she was a child. She used to live in several countries including Japan. She studied at Brown University, where she majored in Writing. However, she didn't finish her school to get married. She got divorced but had four children. She didn't give up writing all her life. Her siblings and her children became insperational in her work. 

 

<Number the Stars> is one of her novels. She has written twenty young adult novels. She has been awarded various book awards. <Number the Stars> won the Newbery Medal and the National Jewish Book Award. Many remember <The Giver> is one of her best written and commericially succesful pieces of her work. In the mean time Lois Lowry was interested in the German occupation of Denmark during the Second World War. Thus she wrote about the Jews were smuggled to Sweden from Denmark. The story was written based on true stories during the Second World War. 

 

I believe Lois Lowry is a great storyteller. She knows how to create a fascinating story with historical facts. It's a mixture of fiction, but an excellent mirror of what really happend during the Second World War in Denmark where their King and citizens helped the Jews from the Nazis' persecution. 

 

3년 전 를 통해 Lois Lowry의 글을 처음 접했습니다. 모두 4권으로 구성된 시리즈물입니다. The Giver가 첫 번째 책이고요. 물론, 마지막 권까지 모두 읽었습니다. 당시 디스토피아적 세계를 다룬 <헝거 게임즈>를 즐겁게 읽었기 때문에 <The Giver>도 재밌게 읽었습니다. 책의 내용은 짧았지만 스토리 구성이 늘어지지 않고 팽팽해 책을 내려놓는 순간까지 긴장하며 읽은 소설입니다. 저는 책을 읽을 때마다 제가 가진 신념의 안경으로 이야기를 재구성합니다. 저에게 그 안경은 기독교적 세계관입니다. 당신의 믿음이 부처에게 의존한다면 당신 역시 좀더 깊이 있는 책 읽기가 가능할겁니다. 그것도 중요한 시각이며 저는 다양한 생각을 독서중 같이 나누기 좋아합니다. 


이 <Number the Stars>도 역시 기독교적 세계관으로 이해하고 나의 믿음을 성장시키는 데 도움이 되는 소설입니다. 제목의 의미를 되새길 수 있는 성경 요절도 저에게 큰 감동을 주었습니다.  Lois Lowry의 글을 처음 접했습니다. 모두 4권으로 구성된 시리즈물입니다. The Giver가 첫 번째 책이고요. 물론, 마지막 권까지 모두 읽었습니다. 당시 디스토피아적 세계를 다룬 <항거 게임주>를 즐겁게 읽었기 때문에 이 책도 재밌게 읽었습니다. 책은 짧았지만 탄탄한 스토리의 구성이 늘어지지 않고 팽팽한 긴장감을 소설 끝까지 가져다주더군요. 저는 책을 읽을 때마다 제가 가진 신념의 안경으로 이야기를 재구성하는 편입니다. 그래서 도 기독교적 세계관으로 좀 더 깊이 있게 생각하며 읽었습니다. 당시 저와 다른 신념을 가진 북클럽 회원과의 의견 교환도 유익했습니다. 

 

The psalm reads that "it is who heals the broken in spirit and binds up their wounds, he who numbers the stars one by one..."

Annmaries thinks that how could anyone number the stars one after another. She wonders. I wonder too.
